Tins of toms

Miriam and Alan each buy 12 tins of tomatoes.

Miriam buys three packs each containing four tins. A pack of four costs £1.40.

Alan buys two packs each containing 6 cans. A pack of 6 costs £1.90.

Who gets the most change from a £5 note?
How much do they get?

  2. Alan gets more change than Miriam because when I added 1:40+1:40+1:40 I got the answer 4:20 and when I added 1:90+1:90 for Alan the answer was 3:80 so Alan gets more change because he spent less than Miriam.

  3. It is £1.70 because £1.40+£1.90=£3.30.
