  4. The population of England and Wales almost doubled from 16.8 million in 1851 to 30.5 million in 1901. Scotland's population also rose rapidly, from 2.8 million in 1851 to 4.4 million in 1901. However, Ireland's population decreased sharply, from 8.2 million in 1841 to less than 4.5 million in 1901, mostly due to the Great Famine. Between 1837 and 1901 about 15 million emigrants departed the UK permanently, in search of a better life in the United States, Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, Australia and elsewhere.

  36. The Victorians were quite brutal in some ways they were mainly poor people that grew up in rich family's had lots of money and then they made a workhouse, workhouses were useful in someways but cruel, people had to live in the workhouse people like paupers, homeless and disabled and also orphans. there was a school for education for children but if they did not listen they had to either sit on a hot water pipe or get hit with a stick brutal isn't it? As for the adults they had to cleans mainly the women there were hard labour jobs such as sowing for the women breaking birkc for the men chopping trees for the men and washing up for the women it really sounds cruel but that isn't all of it children under 3 stayed in a room where they didn't even get fresh air!!!! Trick Question: Did the Victorians hands get chopped of for stealing things?
