Thoughts and musings from the Hill Mead KS2 All Stars!
Even though they get food and drinks and a home they still do not like working for them some of the people liked working for them because they got food and drinks and a home.
Who are the inmates working for?
They are working for the rich and wealthy in order to receive good rewards
They are working for the rich and wealthy in order to receive good rewards such as food and a home
They're working for the owners of the work house because they are ill or unimployed disabled pour need medical help or they have no wife or husband.
One the one hand they get feed but on th other hand they may get sick from the food they have.
Why would they get sick?
They would get sick because of the same food every day
You will be sick if you kept on eating the same food every day.
Because they have the same thing every day
For AgainstVictorians at least wore clothes to protect them They had to wear uncomfortable clothes that are itchyFrom bad weatherThey were paid for jobs. They had to use thier money for living
In the workhouse the inmates were treated like slaves they would do work out of their will and was not aloud to take breaks but on the other hand they did have shelter and in return of all that hard work the got fed
ForOn one hand is that the workhouse is that, the clothes don't have stains on it because it's made from dark coarse material.Against On the other hand it's bad because it's made to be uncomftable and unmarried, pregnant women have to wear red dresses.
For clothes Women wore shift dresses with an apron. While men wore shirts striped with cotten and braces, cap Even though the clothing is uncomfatable they got use to it
Life in a workhouse was intended to be harsh, to deter the able-bodied poor and to ensure that only the truly destitute would apply that's the negative. The positive thing is that they had food and shelter for free.
Victorian food were disgusting they ate things that would never give them a stable diet such as boiled meat potatoes bread and cheese. For pudding they have broth rice pudding and they would get three meals a day there uniforms were made to be uncomftable pregnant women whith kids that have no husband wore red clothe so they could feel ashamed they would wear black clothes because if they wore white clothes it would really be obvious to see.
Victorians workhouses had good side as well as bad sides. ProsVictorian workhouses severed all people with with clothes. But the clothes were crouse material which meant they wore Roth and ichy cltothes these were meant to be uncomfortable for people at workhouses
School in the workhouse in the workhouse was very limited especially for the girls. Boys learnt the 3 R's which were reading, writing and arithmetic. Some would argue that children would not get enough education because of there busy schedule. However others would argue that they get to go to school for free because the Victoria time schools were very expensive
The work house was very hard because of jobs on the other hand they have job however they did not get paid.We are very lucky because most of us would have been in the workhouse because we are not in the Victorian most of us are in school the first work house was opened in 1652 Exeter . The jobs were very harsh the men had to break stones women had to scrub. Floor.an amount of people took it as slavery as I told you they don't get paid even though you didn't get paid you would leave the place as skillfull as you were.. The bad thing is that you get no brake.
School life in a workhouseSchool life now is amazing but if you were in workhouses you weren't that lucky. Children, men, and woman didn't have the best education as we have now in fact it was very unfair. The fact that boys learnt reading, writing, and maths while girls were taught basic jobs like kitchen duties and cleaning. It could be argued that girls needed a fair amount of education to help them with jobs for there life as an adult. Some might say that even though there are many reasons why school in workhouses were bad there are also good reasons school was free in workhouses while others had to pay expensive prices in addition the subjects that they learnt helped them for their life school.
Food in a workhouse In the Victorian times people didn't eat good food for example:Bread and cheese, broth, boiled meat. They had the same food ever week and swallowed down. But sometimes they got to eat potatoes only if they were lucky although the didn't have great food they had something to eat at least.Howere, it was not good for them because they had to swollow it down and it didn't have any vitamins.
ForA workhouse was a big building built for poor and homeless people to live and work in so that's kind of good because it stopped people from sleeping on the street. In the workhouse the children slept in a bed and had a roof over there heads so they did have shelter.AgainstPeople that wasn't in the workhouse thought it was a form of slavery because they didn't get eny brakes and when they where having lunch they hade to eat in siclence and nearly all there food was boiled and they had the same food every day but at least there was no oil
A Workhouse was a building for ill people, orphaned children, and disabled people to go and live/work when they have nowhere to stay. You may not believe this but people went there through their own will.Your fist reaction may be that this is the worst place you could imagine, but I think you've only heard one side of the story.Jobs in the work house proved to be very difficult,if you did one tiny thing wrong you'd be punished. Some of the punishments were: having to to carry a basket of clothes on their head and if they dropped a single item they'd be whipped. The men's jobs were:breaking stones ,working in fields and gathering wheat. This women's jobs consisted of:sewing, cleaning floors, and cooking. These jobs helped thoughen them for future events. But these were also hated because the women were only learnt skills for being a maid
FoodEven though this is the topic based on food it doesn't mean it was good. The food was Diluted, horrible and they had the same portion of and the same thing every day.On the one hand they were eating for free,on the other they were getting sick and weren't eating as much as they should have been.If you were in this situation, how would you feel?
ClothesPoor go to the workhouse to work get food and get a home. Poor peopl enter the workhouse there rip your clothes and make you were rasher clothes
For AgaintsThe Victorian Workhouse was a strangle for Men , Women and Children the poinioments were a cruel and the clothing was especially made to be uncomfortable. The Workhouse was a bad place people even died there but they didn't have a choice between going to prison.
Victorians had to wear rip clothes even though the people just came in the workhouse
Clothing in the workhouse is really bad and itchy because it's made out of dark coarse materials and it could give you a rash but the more you wear the clothing it would spread but if scratched it spread even more.
In the work house was horrible inmates were treated disgusting and had to work all day out of there will ,however they did get a roof to stay under and they were getting fed and had clothing to were and it was great they got fed three time a day even though their food was apporling to human site
Jobs in the Workhouse is really one of the worst things ever because if you think about it guardians were really cruel so the jobs were horrifying some may say that workhouse jobs could end your life.
Workhouses workhouses was a place for ill, poor and unemployed people. Some say that if you were in a workhouse, you would get up very early in the morning, were very uncomfortable cloths, complete a huge amount of jobs and some times got punished. But on the other hand the workhouse can be a good place in the Victorian times, you have shelter, you have food and instead of wereing rags you can were proper clothes.
Clothing was uncomfortable. It was dark and course consequencly giving the children a rash. On the one hand the clothes could be way better but on the other hand, at least they were provided clothes for free.
Jobs in the WorkhouseWork was hard in the workhouse. The men had to do heavy labour such as:Grinding corn, breaking stones, and chopping wood. The woman done kitchen which was very hard.At least they had shelter and food in exchange for them to have lived there. On the other hand, some people believed that this was a form of slavery as they were not paid though they did get provided with clothes aswell.Food in the WorkhouseFood was regularly provided in the Workhouse. The had 3 meals a day and was kept the same. For breakfast, they had a type of porridge called gruel with broth and a side of bread and cheese. For dinner (which is lunch now) they had boiled me and if they had a garden, they would plant potatoes. For supper(which is dinner now) they had rice pudding and steamed suet pudding. It was good that they had 3 meals a day but one the other hand it was horrible because it was diluted!
For Against Men did heavy labor. Men did hard work Which kept them fit. And didn't get lots of Sleep
ClothesOn one hand the clothes where good because if dirt ever fell on the clothes it would blend in with the clothes. On the other hand it is made out of dark coarse material and the where made to be uncomfortable also unmarried, pregnant women had to wear red dresses to embarrass them.
The clothing in the workhouse was uncomfortable and ltchy. The clothes were dark and course sometimes giving them a rash
The negative side was that they had to sit in straight line and you was not allowed to talk to each other and the positive thing is the that they get three meals a day
Cloths The bad thing about the cloths is that they were made to be uncomputable The god thing about the cloths is that the colour was dark so you can't see the stains FOODThe bad thing about the food is that they had Chicken once a week. The good thing about the food is that they get three meals a day.
Did you know that the uniform were made to be uncomfortable They ate broth boiled meat and portage
