Tough times for the Tudors

Because there was no official police force during the Tudor times, the crime rate was very high. However, the punishments used to try to prevent crime were rather extreme!

1. What were the most common crimes committed by the Tudors and what were the punishments for committing these crimes?
2. What do you think about the punishments? Were they fair or too harsh?
3. Were there any well known Tudors who were punished for their crimes? Which punishments did they face?

    1. Which punishment do you consider to be the most harsh and why?

    2. Personally I would choose beheading because it's related to sudden death. I also chose beheading because they separate a part of your body so you can't heal yourself.

  6. I think beheading and boiling people is not a really bad because everyone is human and Henry VIii would not like it if it was the other way round so I don't think It was a good idea

  7. There were no police during the Tudor times. However, laws were harsh and wrong doing was severely punished. In Tudor times the punishments were very, very cruel. People believed if a criminal’s punishment was severe and painful enough, the act would not be repeated and others would deter from crime as well.Beheading ("Death by the Axe")This was a punishment that resulted in your head being chopped off! The heads were sometimes placed on spikes along London Bridge or other places.Beheading was considered less degrading than hanging, and it usually killed more quickly. Noblemen (rich) who committed crimes were more likely to be beheaded than hung.Hanging from the gallows. A piece of rope was put around the neck making it hard for the person to breathe. The person would be hung from the rope until he/she had stopped breathing and was dead. People were hung for crimes such as stealing, treason, rebellion, riot or murder.

  8. they had very cruel punishments. They would be hit painful enough but if someone was to brake the law would have the head chopped of 70,000 people suffered the death penalty during the reign of Henry VIII some king people would often punishment taken places there crimes were stealing begging murder treason and fraud. there to harsh because i think there punishment should be hit them with a belt once but stealing in prison.

  9. there was women found guilty of treason or petty treason were sentenced to be burned alive at the stake crushed.for attempting to murdering someone you could be boiled alive in a big bowl of hot water. many towns had a whipping post. the victim was chained to the post stripped to the waist and whipped. you can be whipped for stealing a loaf of bread.

    1. Why do you think the punishments were so harsh Destin?

      Delete
    2. I think that the crimes were harsh because there was some small crimes and the punishment really hurts. Some might even kill people. They could have been arrested as well because they have soldiers.

  10. The most common crimes were getting whipped, tortured and abused.
Some punishments were not so bad but other punishments were really scary like, chopping up a person then putting them in a big sack.
Lots of Tudors committed a crime like Mary 1 she exacuted many people but did not face her punishment,of course because she was the child of the king although she has been named Bloody Mary for how many people she exacuted.

  15. 1. Vagrancy(Homelessness) was a very common crime and was punished by whipping, or even hanging.
    2. Today it would be unfair to behead someone, but there was no police force.
    3. Dick Turpin was hanged for horse theft.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I found it very shocking that vagrancy was considered such a serious crime Fathia. Why do you think this was?

      Delete
    2. Because the vagrants might have not been vagrant at all. They could trick people for money, or even be associated with a murderer who hates anyone against him/her. Also the government could have spent thousands on free houses but the people kept sleeping on the street to annoy them.

  16. heading means that your head gets chopped off with a axe. they also did that because it was fast death. hanging means that you get hang by a rope they would do this if some one was stealing.some people had there hands cut of if they were stealing to teach them a lesson not to steal.the drunk yards claok means you would be put in a heavy barrel and you cant get out of it.

  17. In Tudor London crimes were very serious, people were afraid that varagants and peasents were murders or criminals. If you had a small amount of money it could mean a death penalty, one of the Tudor crime punishmets was the spiked maiden, it was a coffin shaped as a woman with shoe and and needle spikes in side then they would put you in a ditch and fill it up with soil. Another Tudor crime punishment was the back, first you would lie down on your back the where was a big knife at the top then they would slice half of your back of.They did this because they had no police until the Gorgian period when a rich man created it and named it , then it was later called the police force. They changed the name during the middle of the Victorian period.

    1. Fantastic research Ellie! Can you tell us anything about how crime and punishment differed for the upper and lower classes?

      Delete
    2. Upper class people, didn't suffer an unfair prosecute as much as lower class people did. If rich people where sent to prison, and they had a religion they would be able to afford a bed food and much more luxurious items. Meanwhile pore people who were in prison where forced to sleep on hay, sometimes if you were caught during the theft, the convict would be sent to Newgate prison , then were taken on a ship for 6 months at sea all the way to New south whales up north, just like Mary Wade who was a convict, then became one of the founding mothers of Australia. Mary Wade was a lower class citizen and a few years later she was a founding mother. Leaving 50 children in different categories such great grand children .

  25. Tudor punishments were very harsh because they thought if they had a bad enough punishment it would encourage other people to not do it.
Punishments eventually got out of hand so most prisoners were put to death. Some of theTudor punishments were the rack, beheading, hanging, burning, boiled alive and whipping. To be continued

    2. The rack is a torture punishment. What happens is they would put the prisoner on a rectangular, wooden frame then the victims ankles are fastened to one roller and there risks are chained together.

People had comet it so much crimes over 70,000 people died when they comet it there crimes and the very horrible punishments were chopping there heads off, burning people, hanging, whipping, boiled alive and stretching people.
