Say No to Segregation

We continued reading Journey to Jo'Burg - Naledi and Tiro were involved in a pass raid. Having acted out this scene, we empathised with how unfair the apartheid law was. We decided a protest was necessary so, as a year group, we created placards to demonstrate against the apartheid law.

Reflect on how you felt during this protest.
Why did you start the protest?
How did you feel whilst on the protest?
What effect do you think protests had during the apartheid law?
How else do people show how strongly they felt about segregation?

  1. I felt it was unfair because the white people didn’t need a pass but the blacks people did,I wanted to start the protest because I wanted other people to feel the same,to feel more safer on the streets.sothat is why I stared the protest.

  3. Journey to jo burg book inspired us we looked at Soweto uprising and was astonished of the happening it was like being underwater with shark while rain pelted down apartheid was unstoppable and to prevent it from happening in England we must protest

  4. I started the protest because I feel like it’s appropriate so white and black people know to stop swearing to each other. I felt kind of strange because people loose their lives because of the apartheid law so the government has to stop the apartheid law now or Soweto won’t have people at all. People feel like it’s the time to kill and put fires on others houses and many children die so stop the apartheid law or no one will live so I suggest the apartheid law better stop now.

  5. It did the Africans did not give up no matter how many of their family’s died no matter if their was 1% of survival the white Govermnant were sick and tired but blacks did not give up so victory eventually was seeked by Nelson Mandela so we need to stand up to racism to stop any chance of it swallowing up England and killing off our people

  7. I fell freedome because nobody could tell me what to do. I started the protest because I wanted black and white to have equality! I think protest helped black people write what they though was right and show everybody. They could have been writing letters to the government and tellingthe government there thoughts and what they though was right!

Because it was unfair for black people
    It made me feel furious
it was effect because apartheid law separate black people and white people but it was unfair because blacks wasn’t treating as the same with white people so that why this protest was effect
They throw stones at the police

  9. I think the protests that happened during the apartheid actually created more killings and injuries. I think this because each protest more people were killed and they didn’t stop so they were killing more and more little children, because the infants were just doing what they’re bigger ancestors were doing and, what their ancestors were doing was setting a bad example for the little ones.

  10. The reason I started the protest was because it’s unfair how white people get treated like their the king when black people are like there nothing.
When I was on the protest I felt good because like on the first question blacks were treated differently but also I was scared because there are consequences and you don’t know what will happen but I still feel good.
The affects during the apartheid would be horrendous people would have been killed and running into tear gas.
How other people show how strong they feel about segregation is their bravery they don’t care about what happens too them they want to get rid of the apartheid law they don’t want to be forced to Lear about white peoples history.

  11. 1.we did this so the people out the can know what happened in the past and that doesn’t happen agen.
2.I was felling sorry for the people that had a bad life and that they can see that we really do care about them.
3.I think that it really effected there life’s because they could not be free like us.
4.I think that the people in the apartheid law felt like they were not going to be there and do what they were told but stick up for them selves and end the apartheid law and every body could be together and do what they want to do.

  12. (Why did you start the protest?)
I started the protest because of the apartheid law in South Africa. The protest started from 1948 – 1991.
(How did you feel whilst the protest?)
My feeling is getting struck by lightning to stop apartheid, or maybe racism in London, because all of a sudden the race in London could start this madness and destroy Brixton with racism! (I think I went too far)
(What effect do you think protests had during the apartheid law?)
I think the effects happened in the apartheid law when they were doing a protest, people were getting shot and a lot of smoke were coming by the smoke bombs. The madness could’ve continue if Nelson Mandela wouldn’t stop the apartheid but when he decided to end it, he did.
(How else do people show how strongly they felt about segregation?)
I think they felt exasperated by the way segregation started and cannot be together.

  13. Jurying the protest I felt like this is helping us learn more , so if anyone you know is being racist to another person you can tell them that it is not right and that you shouldn’t be doing that to people. I also started to do it to stop racism. I think that if I was alive those days and I was in the apartheid law they would start to understand the fact that this is a wrong thing to do then they would have stoped it. I also think that other people were probably trying to do the same thing that I was doing so just in case it comes to this country I will try to stop it.

  14. I think the effect to the apartheid law is that in the apartheid law times they had a protest because the wanted black and white people to hear what they have been going through and how they have been killing each other and been killing children and killing there on people so the want people to hear there story. A lot of children think history is just a boring thing that they don’t like but history is much more than that in the olden days it wasn’t considered as rasisom but now in 2018 it is considered as rasisom and they can go school together and they can go on the bus together and they can do more stuff but back in the days they were separate at doing everything and there was even a black and white toilet and it makes it a more easier for the builders...

  15. They protested and protested and protested to achieve something you need determination hope and belief if you do something without belief nothing works your just digging a big hole so they tried persuaded and pelted at apartheid like cheetahs and did not give up some people look at apartheid in disgust some find it good however outside the box it was a horrendous time and should be prevented in all ways

  16. We have been saying no to segregation because it means white and black people are separated because of the apartheid law.If the people that was in the apartheid law doesn’t have a pass they will be sent to a prison farm for 25 or 30 years.Because a pass is a important thing to bring with you so you can’t get sent to a jail farm or you will have a bad time in the jail farm. For years people have been trying to end the apartheid law because everything it has done to all the people. When the apartheid ended Africa became more peaceful forever because Naledi became president and she said stop this nonsense.

  17. 1. On this protest I felt like I was the people in Johannesburg, fighting for our rights to keep our people safe.

2.I started this protest because I was thinking about Africa and how it changed their lives so that’s why I done it.

3.I think they thought like in a few years they would die.

Even though I was up stairs I still felt the same way about the march. Is like I had a link how down stairs it was very strong, powerful. We started to do this because it felt right and noble and we wanted to show respect for the people who died and let us be who we are Today.

  20. I felt like I was doing the right thing and I felt like we did the right thing by protesting .we started protesting because we should all be equal, share the same things like, water fountains and buses.whilst I was protesting I felt bewildered

  21. We started the protest because we wanted to stop the apiartid law and bring freedom to South Africa. Whilst I was doing the protest I felt really mad because of the way everyone treats black, mixed, asin. It didn’t have a big effect until the last on a big group of kids were all protesting together it was going good until the police showed up and shoot one bullet and another and then it started all the kids ran for their lives that was just the beginning. By telling other people and getting lots and lots of people on their side or you could get someone quite famous and get them on your side.

  22. The protest started because black people had their rights as well so we made are own placards showing that black and white people could do the same thing. At first, the effect could have been small but then after when they carried on it could’ve started making a great difference and stopped segregation thanks to all the people who carried on even when it grew worse.

I felt that the people who did the protest basically did this everyday,it must be hard for them to be in this riot all the time.we started the protest because we felt that everyone should have their own right to do what they want and not be restricted.I felt kind of sorry because at the same time because they only wanted to be free, but they had to do so much to have white and black have the same stuff like busses.

  30. my protest is about black live because we are the same just a diffrent coulor so stop being racicist and be fair

  31. i felt strong about the protest we did and people that was joining felt fearful and angry because the whites did not treat the blacks the same as them and the fact that they do that stuff. I think that they should not of did that in the first time, even though that i am a white person i would not agree and maybe going them with the protest

I started to protest to say to the white police and white people that it t wasn't fair for the black people so i started to protest for black rights! While I was doing the protest I felt like it was during apatheid and the police were going to arrest us but they decided to film instead of shoot us.

  34. I feel so angry and sad about the march but mostly about the police and that the black people were taken for granted.
