Guilty as charged?

In the story A Thief in the Village, the character Big Walk is accused of stealing yams, coconuts, goats and chickens. Opinion in the village is split. Mr Anderson, Duke, Uncle Slim and Cousin Dago think he is guilty, Neena wonders if the evidence really stacks up.

What do you think? Is Big Walk guilty or not? Remember to give reasons for your answer.

Word challenge
What do we mean by scapegoat? What other words could you use to mean this?

  1. He is innocent it is duke just because he looks scruffy it doesn't mean that he is the thief.

  2. I think the word scapegoat is a person or group that is made to bear blame for others. According to the Old Testament, on the Day of Atonement, a priest would confess all the sins of the Israelites over the head of a goat and then drive it into the wilderness, symbolically bearing their sins away.

    1. That's an interesting point Taio, perhaps Big Walk is so used to being treated as a criminal that he has started to think of himself as one. What do you think James Berry is trying to teach us?

  4. Big walk is not guilty beacuse if some one is dirty alone and lives in a dump an half smart dose not mean you have to be rood and disrespectful to him. Event me myself would not take the blame if it was not me who would steel if I was not big walk I would stand by his side and tell the judge that this man is not bad or guilty. Never judge a book by it's cover.

    1. This is very honourable Kermarley. We must always remember to defend people who may have been unfairly treated by others. Why do you think I have used the word honourable?

  5. I think poor old big walk is innocent . You should not judge people by their looks. He grows his own food so he doesn't need to steal. He could just be shy , that's why he doesn't talk to many people.

    2. Okay miss Diss , big walk is innocent , because he was mot the one who has been stealing the chickens, pigs and goats . big walk should not be in jail because if you judge someone how the look dose not mean that you should not blame big walk . big walk is very innocent and shy a bit but when he talks to people they just bully him that is why big walk is innocent.

  6. I think he is guilty of theft, because he looks like a criminal. He carries a machete, no normal person has a weapon. Also, his dog is dangerous, it always barks and snarls at people. He's not like everybody else.

I think big walk is innocent because, you should not judge a book by its cover just because he is scruffy and untidy doesn't mean he's the thief. Maybe he rathers sacks instead of bags like all of us do, he could just be shy, not all people are confident to talk to others. He could just like making his own food in the country, just because he is big doesn't mean he is stealing from the shops.

I think that scapegoat mean's blaming some one for the wrongdoing or being blamed for some thing that they did not do

    1. A good argument Jayanna, it does sound like Big Walk is a victim here. What do I mean by victim?

    2. Some really good points, Jayanna. How does Duke manage to hide the fact he is the real culprit?

  8. I think big walk is innocent because big walk is diffrent and you know every body is diffrent. If somebody is dressed up in rags, dirty, thir hair is tangled is because they like it. So you say you read a book but you don't like the cover you know of you read the book it will be interesting so don't judge people's appirance.

  10. I think he is innocent because you can't just judge a person by how he looks you have become their friend and see how it feels like to be there friend.

  11. I think that he is not guilty because he is just different as Kermarley said "He lives all alone he can easily hide his stolen goods in that stinky little kitchen of his as slippery as an eel. But as Jason said "But wait what if he is innocent his hut is in the country side after all." Jason is right but Kermarley is kind of right. Just look at it, he can hide his stolen stuff in his kitchen if he was the thief but he is not.

  14. Big walk is inersent oviusly he just wants a friend and Matthew kermarly is not right because we have not read the whole of the story what if duke hid his stuff in his police station mabey chief was in it as well we will never know what gonna happen in the future you may think big walk is a very angry stubben man but he would not heart a fly . It's like come on you guys can not act like you have not had an angry moment

  16. Well honestly i think it has something to do with chief because he probably will put him in then let him out the next day

  17. The moral of the story is don't say someone's done something just because of the way how they dress or look

  18. pepol think that the man is guilty because is different but that mean that he is guilty. I think he is not guilty because he might grow he's own food and make's he's pet food. Duke is the the guilty one.

  19. I think big walk steal goats and pigs and chickens but nana so duke or Big Walk and there cud the poles and it was the chief and mum and the dad and the children and Big Walk eat

  21. Man man looks guilty but I don't really think that Man man is really culprit he is the one that is trying to finde the culprit.I think that Big walk is the one that is guilty h all the time he walkes with a old bag . Everyone thinks it is him I think to it looks like there is things in Big walks bag no one knows what is in Big walks bag I think what is in Big walks bag is lots of cocnuts in there that what been going missing coconuts... Is it really him Man man or Big walk . Man man is the one theat is trying to find the Teaf that been steeling the coconuts or it is Big walk the one that has a dog and has a old bag in his hand .

    THE END

  23. Big walk is scrafy and dirty he is also lazy . All of the fillege shot at him and he never cose to the shop. Big walk has a big fat dog and he is she and doesn't talk to the villagers . Nanna and Man man fing vat he is innocent .

  24. I think that scapegoat means that when you wear trashed clothing and you don't have any more money. So basically that means that you are so poor.Or maybe it means a person that always gets the blame because he/she is different. It even might mean rasisum I don't know it can mean good/bad maybe both.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Big walk is innocent because nobody has any proof of him stealing they only think that because he has a big stomach and has knotty hair but just because he doesn't look nice or go to the shop doesn't mean to be continued

  26. I think that it was not big walk because he is just a lovely man but all the villagers thought that he was the thief but it wasn't big walk Nina and man-man thought that big walk did steal all the coconut but it was some one else but big walk didn't no who so he thought but it terned out to be duke because he as bean getting popular but big walk expected to Nina and man-man why he has been action strang because he was a bit shy and all the villagers and Nina and man-man all said sorry because they the was telling him of for stealing coconuts and it wasn't him.

  27. Big walk is not guilty just because he looks poor does not mean he's mean you can't just judge people by how they look or smell
