Black authors: Ifeoma Onyefulu

I have chosen a selection of short stories called The Girl Who Married a Ghost, by the Nigerian author Ifeoma Onyefulu. The book transports you through a magical world where animals talk, a world not so much about happy endings but more about learning a lesson or two.

One tale is about a greedy tortoise, who hides food from all his jungle friends during a famine only to learn the importance of sharing after he is caught out.

But it's not all about morals. There are some funny moments usually involving the tortoise. My favourite was when tortoise is dances around inside a cooking pan in Talented Grasshopper

Now it's your turn. Read the book and tell me what your favourite parts are.

  2. I have been reading the tale about the eating competition and from what I have read so far I know that the Elephant is smug because he said that he could eat all of the animals before the competition even started . Giraffe dissagreed with the eating competition. The eating competition was the lions idea .

  5. This book has 10 different African folk tales . There's one about why the lizard nods his head , one about why the turtle has cracks on its shell , the great eating challenge , one about a cooking competition

My favourite take is the one about the girl who married a ghost and I like it because there was a girl who was the most beautiful girl in the village and she thought she was better than everyone else because of her beauty. it was even princes dreams to marry her so one day she decided she wanted to get married so she held a competition . Word about the competition got spread quickily soon there were hundreds and hundreds of men lined up to get married to her. Every time a man came the girl would like him a little bit but just not with all her heart she wanted a man her heart desired fully not partly so she sent all of the men home. Later that night she went out for a walk she made a wrong decision though because during the night that was when all of the ghost were roaming . So a ghost heard her winging about wanting to marry a man that her heart desired so the ghost snuck into people's houses and stole some of their body parts and put them on him for the princess to think that he was a normal man. Surprisingly she spotted the ghost and she decide to marry him because her heart desired it . The ghost agreed to marry her and they went into the princesses car and went out to dinner they hadn't got far until the ghost said it needed the toilet so they stopped and when it came back the ghost had no body parts left the princess wasn't horrified and still married the ghost . The ghost quickly possessed the princess and taught her a lesson!!
